Belgium is a leader in (bio)pharmaceutical innovation in Europe. The (bio)pharmaceutical sector lives and thrives on innovation. The 679,575 employees in the European (bio)pharmaceutical industry work every day to find new medicinal products and treatments to provide new solutions to patients. The figures you will discover in this brochure demonstrate that Belgium occupies a very special position.

More than 1 out of 4 Belgian households have at least one cat, and more than 1 out of 5 have at least one dog. Almost 2 out of 3 of Belgians say to eat meat at least 4 times a week. We do not often reflect on it, but human and animal are part of the same ecosystem. Therefore, healthy animals mean healthy people.

In België zijn ongeveer 500 artsen werkzaam in farmabedrijven, in verschillende therapeutische domeinen. In de komende 5 jaar zullen er naar schatting nog 50 à 80 nieuwe posities bijkomen.

Hoewel ons land wereldwijde erkenning geniet als een van de belangrijkste centra voor farmaceutisch onderzoek, is de farmaceutische sector voor velen nog steeds een onbekende. Nochtans biedt de sterke aanwezigheid van innovatieve farmaceutische bedrijven en de diverse activiteiten die ze in ons land ontwikkelen, veel mogelijkheden voor een bloeiende carrière in de farmaceutische sector.

Terwijl twintig jaar geleden bijna alle geneesmiddelen van chemische oorsprong waren, zien we de dag van vandaag dat steeds meer geneesmiddelen die in ziekenhuizen en door huisartsen worden voorgeschreven, 'biologische' geneesmiddelen zijn.

In Europe it is nearly impossible to find other countries with as many clinical trials running as in Belgium. With 507 new applications for clinical trials in 2016 and a total of 1,399 trials that year, Belgium is one of the leaders in Europe. Based on the number of inhabitants, Belgium is in 2nd place in Europe.
