Careers in Drug Development

Auditorium Brouwer , Health Campus Jette, Laarbeeklaan 103, 1090 Brussel

Development of drugs from test tube to market: job and career opportunities for chemists, pharmacists, biologists, biotechnologists and physicians.

In order to improve global health and provide better options for patient treatment and quality of life, new drugs are constantly being developed for a range of acute and chronic diseases. As a consequence, the world of pharmaceutical drug development is evolving rapidly. The need for a highly educated workforce is increasing in many of its sectors, but the competencies of PhD holders in life sciences are seldom adjusted to the specific requirements listed in the job vacancies. Moreover, PhD students often lack an understanding of the various perspectives for career development along the chain of industrial activities from test tube to market. They may also wonder how their experience as research chemist, pharmacist, biologist, biotechnologist or physician could optimally contribute to the many processes behind innovative drug development and the invention of new therapeutic strategies.

This 2-days conference is structured according to the life cycle of new drugs from their discovery and design, via their early and late stage development, to their introduction on the market and a long post-marketing life. After a general overview at the start of day 1, national and international experts will highlight the various developmental aspects in each of these stages, while focusing on the current specific career opportunities of each particular stage in Belgium and abroad.

Kristel De Gauquier, Medical Director at, will be speaking at the conference about "Belgium as a biopharmaceutical hub in Europe".
